The Ink Scam Amazon Doesn't Want You to Notice

The Ink Scam Amazon Doesn't Want You to Notice

, by Planet Green, 3 min reading time

Every day, millions of Americans click "Add to Cart" on what seems like an eco-friendly, cost-effective ink cartridge listed on Amazon. It’s labeled “remanufactured” or “high yield,” often sold by a company name you’ve never heard of, usually with a vague promise of compatibility with your printer.

But here’s the truth:

Most of those cartridges are not remanufactured — they’re newly made knock-offs, manufactured overseas, designed to look like legitimate recycled products, and shipped to the U.S. with zero plans for reuse or recycling.

They are non-recyclable. Non-returnable. And fully destined for landfill.

Amazon’s Quiet Cash Machine

Amazon allows tens of thousands of third-party sellers — mostly from China — to list and ship these single-use cartridges using its massive warehousing and fulfillment system (FBA). That means Amazon:

  • Stores them
  • Ships them
  • Profits from them

...while pretending it's just a neutral platform.

Yet these cartridges:

  • Bypass the U.S. remanufacturing industry, robbing jobs from American workers
  • Drain natural resources by using virgin plastic and petroleum-based materials
  • Create up to 7.5 kWh of wasted energy per cartridge
  • And worst of all, end up in U.S. landfills by the millions every week

According to industry estimates, over 1 million non-recyclable ink cartridges are sold and discarded dailymany through Amazon.

The Greenwashing Trap

These foreign-made cartridges are often mislabeled with terms like:

  • “Eco-friendly”
  • “Recycled”
  • “Green Packaging”
  • “High Efficiency”

But look closer:

  • There is no real recycling program associated with them.
  • The cartridges are not made from reused OEM parts.
  • They are built with new materials and cannot be remanufactured, due to patent-infringing chip designs and sealed plastics.

This is greenwashing at scale, designed to trick well-meaning consumers into believing they’re making an environmentally responsible choice.

What Amazon Should Be Doing — But Isn’t

Amazon could:

  • Ban the sale of non-recyclable knockoff cartridges
  • Require proof of remanufacturing from third-party sellers
  • Partner with verified U.S. remanufacturers to support the circular economy

But they don’t. Why? Because knockoff cartridges are cheap to warehouse, easy to ship, and incredibly profitable — especially when listed alongside legitimate products, making them look indistinguishable to the average shopper.

It’s Time to Say No

When you buy one of these fake “remanufactured” cartridges, here’s what you’re really doing:

  • Funding foreign companies that contribute to U.S. landfill waste
  • Displacing U.S. jobs in remanufacturing and recycling
  • Wasting millions of kilowatt-hours of energy annually
  • Supporting Amazon’s billion-dollar marketplace of waste

What You Can Do Instead

At Planet Green Recycle, we remanufacture real OEM cartridges right here in the U.S., using reclaimed materials, tested chips, and sustainable processes. Our cartridges:

  • Use up to 80% less energy
  • Keep waste out of landfills
  • Support American jobs
  • And deliver top performance for your printer

We also sell OEM surplus ink and toner, helping extend the life of perfectly good inventory that would otherwise go to waste.

Your Choice Matters

Amazon won’t stop selling these landfill-bound cartridges until people stop buying them.

So be the change. Don’t fall for greenwashing. Choose remanufactured. Choose American-made. Choose a smarter future.
